Oxhey Jets continued their best run of the season when they completed their first double of the campaign, beating Biggleswade United 3-2 on Saturday.

After a goalless first half, all the action was crammed into the second period which began with a bang with two Jets goals inside the first two minutes. First, John Smith volleyed them ahead before Chris Blunden doubled the advantage.

Two Rob Partington saves kept their lead intact before Biggleswade pulled one back, all in the first seven minutes of the half.

Jets were under the cosh and wobbling, with Partington making three saves to keep his side in front, before they were given breathing space when Greg Usher restored their two-goal advantage.

However there was more drama to come as Warren Gladdy’s conversation about how much time there was left earned him a second yellow.

Biggleswade seized on their numerical advantage to claw a goal back but the fifth-from-bottom Jets held on for three points on a day when all the bottom five teams won, except Bedford who drew.

Jets’ win helped close the gap on Leverstock Green who are one place and two points above them in the nether reaches of the South Midlands Premier Division table.

Green twice chucked away the lead in their 2-2 draw with London Tigers as goals from Ryan Laville and Alex McCarthy were wiped out.

Meanwhile, Sun Sports felt the force of league leaders AFC Dunstable and their prolific striker BJ Christie.

He struck twice, to take his tally to 46 for the season, as the table-toppers inflicted a 3-0 defeat on their hosts. Jermaine Hall got the other goal for the leaders.

Tring Athletic fared much better against quality opposition, earning an excellent 1-1 draw at second-placed Hoddesdon Town to dent their title hopes.

Hoddesdon had picked up the Premier Division Cup days earlier but any hopes of achieving a league and cup double were given a jolt by Athletic, who gave a disciplined performance to come away with a deserved point.

Tring shocked their hosts by opening the scoring through Jack Seaton on six minutes when he finished off Sam Joliffe’s free-kick.

The home side equalised in the 33rd minute, also from a free-kick, but Ian Richardson’s side dug in to earn a point.

A second 2-2 draw followed on Tuesday, but this time it was less satisfying as they missed a host of chances against lowly Broxbourne.

They paid the price for their profligacy when seventh-from-bottom Broxbourne equalised two minutes from time to mean that draw specialists Tring shared the honours for the 11th time this season.

All the goals came in the second half where the hosts were first to draw blood, only for Chris Stapleton to retaliate before Lee Stobbs put them ahead with 15 minutes left.

But Tring treated their lead with butter fingers as Broxbourne struck late on to level.

Berkhamsted had a week to forget as they lost to teams at both ends of the table.

Leaders Dunstable hammered them 6-1 on Tuesday with three goals in each half doing the damage and making Josh Chamberlain’s long-ranger not much of a consolation.

The impact ramifications of the defeat will last a little longer with keeper Carl Tasker now due a suspended after picking up two yellow cards in the gameIt completed a bad few days for Berko who.

On Saturday, Berkhamsted were also undone by fourth-from-bottom St Margaretsbury losing 2-0.
