Callum Shinkwin shot a welcome under-par round to start his Volvo China Open campaign with a one-under 71 following his opening 18 holes in Beijing.
The Bushey golfer has not made the final two rounds in the last five European Tour events he’s played, but the 23-year-old's hopes of making the cut have been lifted after an opening round featuring four birdies left him in a tie for 41st place at Topwin Golf and Country Club.
The Moor Park Golf Club professional dropped three shots, including a double bogey on the 11th, but birdies on the first, fourth, 10th and 15th holes ensured he finished under par for the first time in his last nine rounds on the Tour.
France’s Alexander Levy was top of the leaderboard on nine-under at the end of the first round, one shot clear of Spain’s Pablo Larrazabal.
