A delighted Ashley Charles says adding goals to his game has been a long-term target after getting on the scoresheet in the 2-2 draw with Sheffield United Under-23s on Monday.
Charles took his goal in impressive fashion, arriving at the edge of the box to drive home Dion Pereira’s pass under considerable pressure.
The midfielder made finding the target with more regularity an aim at the start of the season, and believes he is starting to find his feet in front of goal.
“I think that is my third goal of the season and I said last year that I wanted to add goals to my game, so slowly it’s coming and hopefully I’ll be able to get one or two more between now and the end of the season,” he told the club website.
“Dion set me up on the edge of the box and I just hit it low into the corner and beat the keeper, so I was happy with that.
“It was a nice finish.”
While Charles’ goal provided personal satisfaction a game which twice saw Watford allow the lead to slip was far from ideal.
Joy Mukena got the Hornets’ opener but goals from Simeon Oure and Callum Semple ensured the Blades took a share of the spoils.
Charles admitted the manner in which Hayden Mullins’ men failed to hold their lead was a frustration.
“We’re particularly disappointed with the first goal that we conceded. We were only in front for about a minute and I think it’s just a case of switching on more and managing the game,” he said.
“The second one we lost our man in the box, it was a loose header and we’ve got to win those balls. We’ve got to show a willingness to go and head the ball. We need to go back to the training ground and work on it.”
