Ben Wilmot’s versatility will stand him in good stead as his career develops, according to Watford boss Javi Gracia.

A centre-back by trade, Wilmot, who signed for £1 million in the summer, was used in both his natural position and central midfield in Wednesday’s defeat of Reading.

Gracia also used the 18-year-old in centre-midfield during pre-season and has been impressed with the youngster’s adaptability.

“I think he played very well because we started playing with a 4-3-3 but saw that Reading changed and played with three back, which they do not usually do,” Gracia said.

“We changed and Ben played as a centre-back with Adrian Mariappa and Sebastian Prodl and he adapted quickly. He played very well without any mistakes and played with personality.

“Ben can play as a centre-back but we needed more players in midfield and he has played there more times since joining. He has always played well and it is a virtue to be able to adapt and play different positions.”

At no point during his debut against Reading did Wilmot looked fazed and he joined Domingos Quina in producing a display informed by the confidence of youth.

Gracia praised the pair and feels they both showed characteristics which will stand them in good stead throughout their careers.

“I think it (changing position) speaks about his personality and what he is able to do. You can see other young players like Domingos Quina as well, where it is not important about the age,” he said.

“What is important is your personality and what it is that you are able to do when you play. I think they played very well.”
