Watford only had themselves to blame after Newcastle United survived a first-half onslaught to secure their first Premier League win of the season.
Facing a side that had lost all of their previous five home games this season, the Hornets should have been in command by the break after a dominant display in the opening period saw them create a host of goal attempts, but - crucially - only muster one on target.
Adrian Mariappa and Gerard Deulofeu had the pick of those opportunities, while Roberto Pereyra went even closer after the break when he struck the crossbar.
Watford's performance level dropped in the second half though, and their profligacy was to be punished when Ayoze Perez headed in Ki Sung-yeung's inswinging free-kick.
Here are selection of images from a disappointing afternoon on Tyneside.
