Andre Gray believes Europe is a realistic aim for Watford after they showed strength in depth to beat Newcastle United in the FA Cup fourth round.

Gray returned from injury and got his name on the scoreboard as the Hornets saw off the Magpies at St James’ Park.

Speaking after the game, he said that Watford have the quality to push for the European tour the fans in the away section were singing about.

He said: “Why not? I think if we aim low we shoot low and we’ve got the quality. There’s no doubt about that, we’ve not just done it for 10 games, it’s been half the season now and we’re here for a reason.

“There’s no reason we can’t get into Europe and I think that’s what everyone wants to do.”

Gray was delighted to get himself back in the starting lineup and even more pleased with his contribution to the win. He hopes that a prolonged stint in the FA Cup could help him stake a claim for first team football.

He said: “It’s obviously been a frustrating six weeks being injured but I managed to keep myself fit.

“It was my first start today since, I don’t know, the eighth game of the season or something so it was just good to start again and get a goal.

“The manager’s changed it in all the cup games and it’s a massive opportunity not just for me, if you’re not in the starting 11 and you’re not in the league, to come in and do well and to put your name forward for a starting place.

“I had one chance before where I put it over on the half-volley. The second one was just a case of, like I always do, try and hit the target and try and hit it hard and low and it’s always difficult for the keeper. The ball was perfect and I didn’t have to break stride or take a touch it was made easier for me.”

Looking ahead to the next round, Gray is not bothered who the Hornets are drawn against, insisting that they are ready to challenge anyone in the competition.

He said: “I’m not interested, whoever we get, we get.

“I think people wouldn’t have wanted this draw but the players that are not playing are going to take their chance when they get it, so we’re ready for whoever we’re going to get.

“It would be nice to be at home, but it’s just pot luck and we will get on with it.”
