Oxhey Jets were defeated in the final of the St Mary’s Cup on Tuesday night, going down 1-0 against Berkhamsted.

Jets were unable to open up a Berko side that were forced into plentiful changes for the game, particularly in their defence, but James Weatherill in goal managed to keep a clean sheet.

Sean Giordmaina started brightly for Oxehy out on the left and had the game’s first opportunity as he strode forward but dragged his effort wide of the target.

Ashley Morrissey responded for Berko with an effort of his own, but Matt Evans pulled off a terrific double save to keep him out.

Evans was at it again in the second half when he denied Morrissey once more after he latched on to Andrew Ofuso’s cut-back, and Scott Bonner headed wide for the Jets as both sides continued to trade blows.

The Evo-Stik Division One Central side took the lead, though, in the 64th minute. Ben Spaul got his head to a Danny Murphy free-kick to flick into Will Summerfield’s path and he applied the finishing touch inside the six-yard box.

Henry Marku was dismissed for Berko shortly after for some distasteful comments towards the referee, but his side held on to secure the silverware.
