Watford’s Sienna Jetha is a national champion again – and narrowly missed out on a golden hat-trick at the PG Mutual U10-U13 National Championships.

Nine-year-old Jetha had a busy weekend at the event, held by Table Tennis England in Wolverhampton, as she played in every age group.

And it was on the second day of the event that she really shone, successfully defending the Under-10 Singles title she won last year, as well as reaching the final of the Under-12s.

She won every match in the round-robin under-10s event and, in the under-12s, battled through group and knockout stages to reach the final against top seed – and her doubles partner – Maliha Baig. It was a close match but Baig prevailed 3-0 (14-12, 14-12, 11-8).

There was another near miss in the U13 Girls’ doubles, where Jetha & Baig had to settle for silver, losing out in a pulsating match to Saskia Key & Katie Bates, who won 3-2 (11-5, 5-11, 7-11, 11-9, 11-9).

In the U11 singles, top seed Jetha was surprisingly knocked out in the quarter-finals, losing 3-1 (11-7, 7-11, 11-6, 11-4) to Chui-Que Wong.

In the U13 singles, Jetha reached the last 16, losing 3-0 (15-13, 11-8, 11-4) to seventh seed Connie Dumelow.

Jetha, a pupil at Aldenham School, said: “It didn’t do as planned on Saturday – the under-11s got really bad for me and I felt under pressure.

“But I thought on Sunday it was a new day and I stayed focused and fought for every point. I played well and I’m happy to win the under-10s and get to the under-12s final.

“I want to dedicate my win to my dad, because it’s Father’s Day.”
