A late rearranged fixture helped blow the title race wide open after Evergreen surprised Reed Rangers with a 4-2 win to move level with their beaten opponents on 15 points.

Evergreen had to do it the hard way, coming from behind twice to take the three points and inflict a second league defeat in three weeks on Rangers.

It was Reed who started the better and they went ahead nine minutes before half-time when Louis Bircham set up Andrew Brennan to head them in front.

The lead didn’t last until the break though, as Evergreen equalised when a well-worked short corner between Ben Adams and Jamie Robertson saw the latter swing over a cross for Tom Verbena to glance the ball home.

Evergreen had a goal disallowed for offside after the interval before Reed retook the lead when Nick Kerley volleyed in from close range.

Evergreen again pulled themselves back into the game and levelled for a second time after a period of sustained pressure ended with Adams firing in a free-kick from 25 yards out.

It was one-way traffic thereafter and Evergreen went ahead for the first time following a swift counter-attack which saw Adams once again fire in from long range.

Reed tried to push but were getting no joy against a well-marshalled defence led by skipper Ant Benvenga, and from another swift counter-attack the ball was played over the top of the Reed defence and Matt Smart nipped in and rounded the keeper to complete the win.

FC Unicorn moved off the bottom of the table following a second league win of the season after they edged a seven-goal thriller with fellow strugglers St Josephs 4-3.

Unicorn started with only 10 men and were to remain with the same number until more than 50 minutes were on the clock.

Unsurprisingly, Josephs had capitalised on their numerical advantage after 25 minutes when Dan Griggs got to a loose ball before the Unicorn keeper to score the first goal.

However, the 10 men levelled with five minutes left of the half as Jamie Calvin’s cross was handled in the area and Danny Warwick equalised from the spot.

Despite the arrival of Unicorn’s 11th man early in the second half, St Josephs scored twice.

They made it 2-1 when some good play by Josh Towle allowed him to drive at the defence, he picked out Griggs on the left wing and his cross was met by Robbie Tocher who cushioned his shot past the keeper.

Shortly after, Joes scored their third when Roy Byron finished in the box after a scramble, but that was to be the prelude to a dramatic comeback.

It started when Calvin drove forward with the ball for 40 yards and fired a shot across which was parried to the edge of the box by the keeper where Jack Bishop stroked his finish into the net.

With their tails up, Unicorn equalised thanks to Bishop again.

Calvin’s ball found the feet of Danny Warwick 30 yards out, he spun his defender and slipped the ball to Bishop who pinched a yard before firing across goal and in off the post.

Unicorn could smell blood and the game became end to end.

A penalty appeal from Joes was turned down but it was their opponents who scored the decisive seventh goal when Matt Owens fed Calvin who clipped the ball over a defender’s head and Callum O’Connor took it around the oncoming keeper and kept it in play before making it 4-3.

This prompted a frantic final 10 minutes in which Josephs threw everything at their opponents, but the Unicorn defence held firm to seal a vital three points.

Another side to claim a second three points of the season were Old Fullerians who beat Chorleywood Club 3-0, sending the home side to the bottom of the table as a result.

Fullers went in front when Craig Totton’s free-kick to the back post was kept in play by Ryan Woosley, the ball hit Charlie Hailey and fell to Stephen Pich who controlled and volleyed home.

Hailey doubled the advantage before half-time when he ran through the midfield and played a clever one-two with Pich who back-heeled the ball for his team-mate to bend his finish into the top corner from 20 yards out.

After a tricky spell as Chorleywood tried to reduce the deficit in the second half, Old Fullerians made sure of the three points when Ryan Woosley was gifted an open goal from a poor pass by the opposing keeper.
