Ben Foster has described Watford's confidence as "crazy low" in the wake of their 4-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City last night.

That loss, coupled with Aston Villa's win over Arsenal, means the Hornets go into the final game of the season in the bottom three and staring down the barrel of a relegation.

While the goalkeeper himself prevented the scoreline from looking even worse with a number of big saves, he thought the result was exactly what Watford's performance deserved.

“I don’t think we helped ourselves,” he told Sky Sports after the game. “I don’t think we did enough to do anything but what the result suggested. The confidence is so crazy – crazy low. I don’t know why it should be but you get into a state of trying to minimise as much damage as you can and it’s a dangerous way to do things. They’re Man City. They’re very, very good.”

Asked if Nigel Pearson's sacking at the weekend and the change of head coaches had anything to do with the defeat, the goalkeeper said the team had only themselves to blame for what happened.

“We’re well versed in what goes on at this club and it is what it is. You just get used to it," he said. "In football nowadays, nothing seems to shock and you roll with the punches.

“You can’t ever blame it on anything but your own performances. We have to look at ourselves. We’ve got a massive game on Sunday and that’s all we’ve got to look at now.”
