Glenn Murray has described his decision to leave Brighton and Hove Albion for Watford as a "no brainer".

The 36-year-old has joined the Hornets on loan for the upcoming season with his contract with the Seagulls due to expire at the end of the campaign.

Murray is only 12 goals short of the Brighton goalscoring record and while he would have liked to seen himself surpass Tommy Cook in the number one spot, he said he was unlikely to play the number of games required next season to reach that target and felt the Hornets offered him a better chance to play football.

"No it wasn't a tough decision it was just one of those things," he told TalkSport. "I didn't think I'd get the game time to be able to get anywhere near that target, so for me it was a no brainer to go out on loan and play football while I still can.

"That's the whole idea behind it, I want to play football while I still can and enjoy it and score as many goals as possible."

Having trained with Watford's new head coach Vladimir Ivic for two days, Murray is impressed with the set up at Watford and hopes he could be the man to provide some stability at Vicarage Road after three head coaches were sacked last season.

"The gaffer is brilliant I have been under for him a couple of days now. I am really impressed with him and I'm just looking forward to getting started, getting the Championship season kicked off and underway.

"Hopefully it will be a bit more stable this year and we can keep our manager as we are."

Having played in the Championship before Murray knows how tough a division it can be. With the coronavirus pandemic resulting in a condensed season, the striker feels it will be the toughest campaign ever in the second tier.

"I think it is going to be tougher than ever being condensed this year with the later kick off of the season," he said.

"The games are going to come thick and fast, but that gives us the opportunity to either gain momentum or bounce back from any disappointment.

"I am really looking forward to it and just aim to get as many goals as possible. I think everyone knows with the strength of Watford's squad our main is to bounce back straight away. "
