A croquet club has finally been able to use its new pavilion, 18 months after the Covid pandemic halted progress.

Watford Croquet Club, which was founded 85 years ago and has more than 80 members, has had improvements made to its hut in Cassiobury Park, which was lacking facilities it needed.

With the support of its members and Watford Borough Council, the club finally had its old hut refurbished 18 months ago, but due to Covid restrictions has only just been allowed to use the building.

Chairman Janet Lewis said: “With our four lawns and great facilities we look forward with pride to be able to host other clubs and players from around the country.

“So many people have spent so much time and energy on reaching this goal, and this could not have been achieved without the substantial support of Watford Borough Council.”

The opening party on July 22 saw more than 60 people attending, including past members, councillors, the groundsman, and Mayor Peter Taylor.

Members donated a Balthazar of champagne, which is the equivalent of 16 normal bottles.

The occasion also gave the club the opportunity to present all the trophies won last season.

The croquet club is keen to encourage new members to join.

Only two people are needed to play the game, with all necessary equipment and coaching available.

The annual membership costs £80, which includes light refreshments.
