Burnley and Crystal Palace maintain an interest in Will Hughes as the midfielder looks to be edging closer to a Watford exist.

Both clubs are understood to have formally registered interest in the shape of initial offers around the £5million mark, neither of which have been accepted.

However, dialogue has since continued and a second bid could arrive in advance of next Tuesday's transfer window deadline.

Reports over the weekend suggest Palace are close to that stage with an offer that could rise to £10m but sources on Sunday evening said that a second bid from the Eagles had not been tabled just yet.

Aston Villa made contact earlier in the transfer window, but never reached the point of putting forward an offer.

The situation surrounding Hughes has been rumbling on since the off-season when he turned down a new contract on improved terms.

Since then his representatives have been looking at suitable routes away from Vicarage Road that would also keep the player in the top flight.

Speaking in his press conference last weekend, Watford head coach Xisco Munoz said the situation then was the same as it had been before and that all he could do was "wait and see" what would happen.

"I know it's the same situation," Munoz said.

"It sometimes happens when the agent and clubs speak about a situation. At the moment we wait and we will see what happens.

"I don't know about Will. Sometimes you know these situations in football. It's normal to have these situations and all clubs have this.

"We'll see what happens. Right now it's with the agent and the club. I don't know the decision of this situation."
