Ben Foster was disappointed with Watford's part in the goal they conceded against Arsenal in their 1-0 defeat and insists his teammates needed to be smarter during the build up.

With Hornets midfielder Ozan Tufan down on the ground, Danny Rose tapped the ball out of play, expecting Arsenal to return possession.

However, with Tufan climbing to his feet soon after, requiring no treatment, the Gunners played on and went on to score the only goal of the game.

After the match, head coach Claudio Ranieri said that Arsenal lacked respect with the goal, but the goalkeeper told Sky Sports that while he felt the hosts perhaps should have at least played backwards from the restart, Watford played their part by not insisting play be returned to them as soon as they had put the ball out.

"I have a little problem with it," said Foster. "In my book, I think that deserves to be booted back up the pitch towards their goalkeeper. That's the way that I would have seen it going, but the way it happened, we need to look at ourselves a little bit there because we need to be cleverer.

"I think if Danny Rose is kicking the ball out there, we need to make a song and dance about it before the game gets carried on. We need to be throwing our arms up in the air saying 'get it back to the goalkeeper' all that kind of stuff. It's too late, once they've taken the throw in, to then concede the goal, it's too late then, you've got to do it beforehand.

"You've got to do it straight away, even before the throw in's taken, people need to be throwing arms around, going up to them, standing on the ball, all that kind of stuff. Once the goal goes in, it's too late."

The game marked Foster's 500th Premier League appearance and, with a penalty save and several other smart reaction stops, he showed that he is still capable of performing in the English top flight.

However, he was unhappy with the result, after what he felt was a strong showing from Watford.

I'm not too happy to be perfectly honest with you," he added. "At the end of the day, it's a defeat and that's the disappointing bit. We were decent today, we were okay, we were in the game. When you're playing away at Arsenal you know you're going to concede chances and that's way it played out, we just weren't able to really go for the throat today, I thought, but fair play to Arsenal, they're a good team."
