The Premier League has blocked clubs from taking part in a charity initiative put forward by Shelter that would have seen home teams wearing their away kits on Boxing Day.

The #NoHomeKit idea was put to the league by the homeless charity, who estimate 180,000 households have lost their homes during the coronavirus pandemic.

Clubs were reportedly in favour of taking part, but the league has said it would be against their rules around kits, which state that home teams must wear home kits as their first priority.

The Premier League has however noted that clubs are allowed to change their sponsor for one game per season and replace it with a charitable message.

In a statement to the BBC, the league said: "The Premier League receives a large number of requests from charities every season, however we aren't able to support all centrally.

"Clubs are entitled to support charitable causes, and we encourage clubs to do so, provided it is in compliance with Premier League rules."

BBC Sport claim that a number of clubs are now considering their own initiative to promote #NoHomeKit.

Watford are due to face Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux on Boxing Day.
