Watford are considering a move for Rangers full back Borna Barisic, as they look to bolster defensive options in January.

With Adam Masina and William Troost-Ekong set to depart for the African Cup of Nations, alongside Imran Louza and possibly Emmanuel Dennis, and a number of defensive mistakes costing the Hornets dearly this season, additions at the back are being planned.

A report in The Athletic earlier today highlighted Barisic as an option being considered and sources close to the player later confirmed the interest.

It is understood that things are currently at an embryonic stage and no official bid has been tabled as of yet.

Decisions are still being thought through by Watford, who are weighing up the best way to approach their business this winter.

While January rarely offers the best value for players, it is felt that given the current situation, with the club teetering precariously above the relegation zone, investment is needed to solidify a leaky defence that is yet to keep a clean sheet in the league this season.

At 29, Barisic is possibly approaching the twilight of his career, while other options like Hibernian's Josh Doig, who the club have long been admirers of, is younger and could potentially increase substantially in value.

However, the former is a Croatian international and has represented clubs across Europe since his senior career began back in 2012, so would offer greater experience.
