Watford's request to add Dan Gosling to their 25-man squad has been accepted by the Premier League.

The Hornets "triggered the process" to include the midfielder after Ashley Fletcher left a gap in the squad with his loan move to New York Red Bulls.

Gosling was omitted from the original updated list last month, having struggled for game time during the first half of the season.

After appearing as a substitute in the opening day victory over Aston Villa, the midfielder only managed to appear in two other matches for the Hornets, including the 3-1 Carabao Cup defeat to Stoke City and the 4-1 FA Cup loss at Leicester.

He was signed in January 2021 as part of Watford's push for promotion from the Championship, and made 13 appearances in total, scoring twice, including a vital winning goal away at Norwich that moved the Hornets to within one victory from the Premier League.

Gosling did have chances to depart during the January transfer window, but staying with Watford remained his preference due to personal and family reasons.

Nevertheless, the situation raises questions over why Fletcher was named in the squad in the first place, if the club were planning on sending him out on loan, but Gosling is seen as someone who can now provide extra experience for the remainder of the campaign as the club battles relegation.
