Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster is leading a campaign calling to prevent the needless deaths of whales dying in fishing nets each year.

The 38-year-old used his ‘not in our nets’ sustainable towel at Anfield over the weekend as Watford faced Liverpool to push the message of the movement.

It’s part of a wider campaign from global marine charity Whale and Dolphin Conservation, designed to highlight the issue - known as ‘bycatch’ - and put pressure on fisheries ministers to prevent the deaths of thousands of dolphins and whales in fishing nets.

More than 1,000 dolphins and whales die from bycatch in UK waters alone.

Foster said: “It’s my job to keep things out of nets – to make important saves.

“So I got involved with the Whale and Dolphin Conservation #NotInOurNets campaign to use my role in football as a platform for change, to help save whales and dolphins and keep them out of nets."
