Pontus Dahlberg is happy to be home after completing a permanent move back to IFK Gothenburg.

The 23-year-old goalkeeper left the Swedish club to move to Watford in January 2018 and his return for an undisclosed sum was confirmed yesterday, with the Hornets retaining a “significant” sell-on fee.

In comments translated from Gothenburg’s website, Dahlberg said: “This is where I want to continue to develop and I want to be part of taking my team to the top again.

“Every opportunity I've had, I've been at Kamratgården (Gothenburg’s training ground) to build myself up and I've kept in close contact with several people at the club since the day I left.

“It feels very good to come home for real.”

The goalkeeper never made a first-team appearance during his four-and-a-half years with the Hornets, but had loan spells at Dutch outfit FC Emmen, BK Hacken in his homeland, and Doncaster Rovers and Gillingham in League One.

Gothenburg director Hakan Mild thanked Watford for the part they played in enabling Dahlberg to return to a club where he progressed through the academy ranks.

Mild told the club website: “Without going into any details of the agreement itself, I can state that it has been a very good dialogue and negotiation.

“Watford have nurtured Pontus' development over the years he has been with them and they wish him all the best for the future.

“We at IFK Gothenburg are very happy that that future is with us.”
