Watford boss delighted with Choudhury's debut in Burnley win

The midweek signing from Leicester City was one of the Hornets’ stand-out performers in last night’s 1-0 victory over Burnley, helping to give the midfield a better balance as he got stuck in with relish, anticipating and dealing with danger and also showing a willingness to have the ball.

“I thought he was excellent,” said Edwards. “Tenacious, his running, his desire, he’s infectious the way he gets about. He covers the ground so quickly. It was a terrific debut and I was really pleased with him.

“He was just cramping up a little bit so that was the reason we brought him off and we were making a couple of changes due to the sending off as well.”

Another player who was vital in the Hornets securing three points was Daniel Bachmann, who made three or four very good saves in the second half to continue his fine form from the 1-1 draw at West Bromwich Albion on Monday night.

“He’s had a very good week,” Edwards acknowledged. “We’ve needed him. He’s been magnificent. I’ve said this before in other interviews, he’s doing his job very, very well. He’s very professional and he’s great around the place.”

Watford’s winner came in first-half injury time when Tom Cleverley finished off a good move involving Kem Sema and Ismaila Sarr, but sustained an injury in scoring and had to be replaced by Dan Gosling at the interval.

Edwards explained the injury was in the calf area but was hopeful it was not a serious problem.

The head coach said: “He missed some of pre-season as well with a similar sort of issue. I’m not anticipating it being a real problem but we’ll manage him and assess him.

“If you think about it he didn’t play much football in pre-season. It’s probably because of Clevs’ attitude and desire that he’s been able to play the football he has done, to the quality he has done because he missed probably four weeks, but he was just feeling a bit too much pain to be able to carry on.”
