Vicarage Road Stadium will mark its 100th anniversary this evening with celebrations set for both before kick-off and at half-time during Watford FC’s EFL Championship fixture against Middlesbrough.

The players will wear the newly-launched black and white third kit, thus mirroring what the Watford players wore for that first game back on August 30, 1922, a 0-0 draw with Millwall.

A host of former players who aren’t regularly to be seen at The Vic are guests of the club this evening, and fans will hear from players representing nearly all of the club’s ten promotion seasons.

From more recent times, Adrian Mariappa and Lloyd Doyley will be among those introduced to supporters before kick-off, at around 7.45pm, while at half-time Peter Walker and John Fairbrother – representing the 1959/60 squad which first one promotion for the Hornets – will join 1960s & 1970s fan favourite Stewart Scullion at pitchside. Walter Lees will also help represent Ken Furphy’s promotion winners.

Watford youth-team products and 1980s stalwarts Kenny Jackett and Gary Porter will be present, as will 1990s double-promotion winners Tommy Mooney and Steve Palmer.

Club captain Tom Cleverley – an important part of the 2020/21 promotion squad – will address the crowd on behalf of the current players, in recognising the stadium’s centenary.

A special effects display set to music will take place before the teams take to the field to Z-Cars, with the club asking supporters to be at their seats by 7.45pm at the latest, to help mark Vicarage Road’s significant milestone.
