Some famous former Watford players are set to put on their boots again on Sunday when another sporting centenary is celebrated in the town.

Lloyd Doyley, Tommy Mooney, Tommy Smith and Marvin Sordell are among the players who are set to play for a Watford Legends team that will take on a West Herts Sports Club side to help mark the club’s centenary.

The match, which is due to kick off at 1pm, will be part of a special family fun day that will also feature music, food outlets and inflatable games for children.

Formerly part of the estate of the Earls of Essex, the Park Avenue location was transformed into a sports ground in 1890, becoming West Herts Sports Club on August 28, 1922 under a deed of trust.

Prior to then, the site was best known as the home of Watford FC, who moved to Vicarage Road in the same year and marked their 100th anniversary during the last-gasp 2-1 victory over Middlesbrough at the end of last month.

The money from that sale has provided an all-weather football pitch, a new car park, an irrigation system for the cricket square and tennis courts and the new clubhouse, with new squash courts and a fitness centre due to open next year.

Sunday’s family fun day takes place will take place from midday to 7pm at the club in Park Avenue, Watford WD18 7HP.
