So much was said and written about both Ismaila Sarr and Joao Pedro during the summer transfer window, and now the pair are committed to Watford, head coach Rob Edwards has some pleasant team selection issues to contend with.

“The extra time without a game has helped Keinan Davis to get fitter, and it’s good that we have competition in that area. Isma (Sarr) and (Vakoun) Bayo have been among the goals and that gives me good options," he said.

“I’ve got to pick the right mix. The options are good, and we have people fighting to stay in the team and others fighting to get into the team. If you want to be successful, that’s what you need.”

Sarr and Ngakia in contention for Blackburn

Sarr’s presence in the team has often led to the belief that the Hornets have to play a front three to accommodate him wide on the right, but Edwards believes the Senegal international can be deployed in more than one position.

“I think Isma is intelligent enough and has the qualities to play in a number of positions,” he said.

“He’s had loads of success in the wider areas, but sometimes – like the QPR game - when he’s out there we don’t involve him well enough. He can also be a bit isolated.

“I want to get the best out of our players and he’s someone we think about a lot, and how we get him into the game. I think he can do that from different areas, and maybe more central positions. He can still pull out wide from those central positions.”

Edwards praised Sarr’s desire to continually better himself.

“He can certainly develop given his young age, and you’d like to think all players can always develop regardless of age. Isma is always wanting to learn and is very engaging when you talk to him about football,” he said.

“He can improve, of course, but he already has previous of affecting games at this level. He did it a couple of years ago and I know he can do it when we get him into a rhythm.

“The challenge to all our forward players is we want end product. We want goals and assists. We need to get into the right areas to score and, more often than not, that is in between the posts.”

Pedro, like Sarr, already has a couple of goals to his name this season and Edwards said that coaching a prodigious talent such as the Brazilian often means you focus on some areas and leave others to the player himself.

“Joao is extremely talented with a brilliant attitude, and he’s a great athlete. He has all the tools you need,” said Edwards.

“There are things that I and the staff can try to help him with, so that he continues to do those things we’ve seen – not just the attacking parts but the chasing 60 yards to win the ball back.

“We can perhaps help him to keep doing those less sexy parts of the game, and also possibly enable him to see where spaces are.

“But with a player that talented, less can be more sometimes. He’ll know more than me on what to do with the ball in certain situations. He’s a genius in some situations and I’ll leave him to it.

“He’s not even 21 yet and he’s only going to keep getting better.”
