With both Ismaila Sarr and Jeremy Ngakia going off injured during the 2-0 defeat at Blackburn, there begins to appear something of a threadbare look in terms of senior players available to head coach Rob Edwards.

Kortney Huse missed the game with a sprained ankle, Hassane Kamara was absent due to a muscle strain, and both Imran Louza and Tom Cleverley are some way from being part of the squad.

I put it to Edwards that even if he wanted to shake things up – which would be totally understandable after such an insipid performance as was witnessed at Blackburn – he’s left with very few options.

Limp, lethargic, lamentable - match report

“We are getting players back and it won’t be too long before we are picking from a very strong and healthy group, but then tonight we’ve potentially lost a couple for the weekend,” he said.

“I’m not going to complain about those things. We have a good squad: I’ve said that all along and I’m not going to change my mind on that. I have good players to pick from. There is no excuse there.”

Sarr has rolled his ankle but was walking when he left Ewood Park which Edwards was encouraged by. Ngakia “felt his hamstring” said the head coach, and will be assessed back at the training ground.

“Neither of them seem able to catch a break when it comes to injuries,” Edwards lamented.

“I thought Jeremy was a plus point tonight. He performed well on a difficult night.”

The early exit from the action of Sarr meant Keinan Davis was brought on a lot earlier than intended.

“We’ve had to try and look after Keinan and make sure we get the balance right of how much he plays,” explained Edwards.

“He wasn’t due to play as many minutes as he did tonight, and there was an element of risk. But the fact he got through the minutes he did was a positive, and some of the bits he showed were of a very high level.”

Kortney Hause missed the game due to a sprained ankle sustained in training. The head coach said he was hopeful the on-loan defender would be fit for the game with Sunderland at Vicarage Road on Saturday.
