The first international break of the season comes after ten games played, and with two weeks before another match there will be plenty of time for reflection.

It’s rather like the end of term at school, where pupils get sent home with a report so that their parents can get an idea of how they are performing.

What would head coach Rob Edwards choose as the word to sum up this opening batch of games, performances and results?

“I think inconsistent is the word. We saw that again today,” he said.

“There’s a lot of potential in this group of players, and I think we saw that today for large spells. But we have to see it for the entirety of games.

“But I also want to focus on a positive today, and that period of the game in the second half where I thought ‘that’s us, that’s what we’ve got to try and get all the time’.

“So there’s been some good, and some things to improve upon.”

It was put to Edwards that there had been recent changes behind the scenes, and whether he needed now to make any changes to develop a culture that creates an even better platform from which he and his players can build success.

“We have a good environment around the place,” he said. “The lads are right on board with things. I know it’s going to pick up in terms of results and performances, and I’m really excited by that.

“The culture and environment at the club is the most important thing, and we’re at a point now where we have got that.

“We’ve got the opportunity to build something here. And I intend to make that happen.”

While some of the squad will be getting on planes to play international matches, those who remain at London Colney will have the benefit of some down time.

“What we’ll get out of the next couple of weeks is a bit of rest, a few days to recover which I think we need,” said Edwards.

“We’ve worked extremely hard since the start of the season. The lads have hardly had a day off.

“But then we have a chance to work hard. The schedule is worked out and it gives us time to work on the things that we can affect.”
