Head coach Damon Lathrope admits he will have some tough decisions to make after Watford Women hit the opposition for six for the second week running.

Following the 6-0 league victory over Cheltenham Town, the Golden Girls boss gave first starts of the season to seven players and they responded superbly to beat Norwich City by the same scoreline in the FAWNL Cup at Grosvenor Vale.

New signing Ellie Head, signing on a dual registration from Arsenal, got her time with the Hornets off to the perfect start with the opener after four minutes, before Helen Ward scored twice before the break.

Another three goals followed after the break through Flo Fyfe and Nicola Gibson before Ward completed her hat-trick in the closing stages.

“I'm really, really impressed with the players,” Lathrope told the club website. “It was an opportunity for a number of them to play their first games, and I think they've done really well.

“It gives me some tough decisions going forwards. It's all they can do when they're given the opportunities, work really hard and take it. I think we’ve seen that today, we know we've got a really strong squad, and today emphasised that massively.”

While another free-scoring display occupied most of the headlines, Lathrope was just as pleased by the defensive performance which saw goalkeeper Jacqui Goldsmid follow Georgie Ferguson in keeping a clean sheet.

He said: “That's huge for us, and that was the first thing we said after the game.

“Two clean sheets, that’s three now in five games. We know that if we want to be a successful team, we've got to stop goals going in. We need to be really ruthless in both boxes, and that was the most pleasing thing for me. Over the last two games we've looked really dangerous in their box, we've defended our box for our lives and been really brave.

“The defenders need a huge pat on the back because they can go unnoticed when we start scoring decent numbers, but without them, obviously we wouldn't be able to do that.”
