It may be one of the shorter away trips for Watford fans this season, but some were so upset by the performance at Millwall they left the ground early enough to be back home before they would do for a game at Vicarage Road.

Supporters could be seen heading towards the exits in the away end at half-time, and the picture here shows the scene at nearby South Bermondsey station at approximately 8.55pm, which would be less than ten minutes after the half-time whistle blew.

This crowd of fans were waiting on Platform 1 for a train back into the capital to get connections from London Bridge.

It’s understood a number of supporters even caught earlier trains than the 9.01pm which those in the picture got onto, meaning they would have left the stadium while the first half was still being played.

One group of 12 Watford fans had all left the stadium before an hour had been played, and by the final whistle the away stand was very spartan indeed.

One fan on Twitter, @Eckers_1, encapsulated succinctly why many fans have been left feeling so let down, not just because of the performance and result but due to the time and cost involved of attending an away game.

He tweeted: “Left work early 130 miles Car to Heathrow (petrol £50 return), parked in Sofitel Htl (£43.00), tube and train to London Bridge (£30.10). Meet mates buy 6 pints in the Grapes (£46.00). Ticket (£30) Balti Pie (£8)

“Watched that. Went home. Cost £193.10. Got home 0200”

Meanwhile, another Twitter user, @HolywellBriggsy, posted “Most unlikeable squad in the 40+ years I’ve been following the club.”

The Hornets face arch rivals Luton Town next at Vicarage Road, a game which kicks off at 12noon on Sunday.
