Some pubs in Watford have announced they will be staying shut on Sunday due to the football.

Luton Town visit Vicarage Road at midday with fans making the trip from Bedfordshire for the first time since 2006.

Trouble has broken out between supporters in the past and police have warned they will have a “significant” presence for the match.

While some venues will be opening as usual, at least a couple of pubs in the town have confirmed via social media that they will be remaining closed for the day due to fears of disorder.

The Golden Lion in Estcourt Road posted: “I’m sure it will come as no surprise but we won’t be opening this Sunday.

“We have NOT been instructed by anyone to close, but based on discussions with licensing and the information we have been given, it seems like the right and responsible choice to make."

It continued: “As much as we can’t afford to lose a day’s trade right now and hate letting people down, nothing is worth risking the safety of our staff and customers.

“We are really sorry to let anybody down and the day will probably go off without a hitch.

“But we can only act on the information we have been given, and it’s a bigger risk than we are prepared to take. We hope you understand.”

The White Lion in St Albans Road has also confirmed via Facebook it will be closed on Sunday.

Earlier this week, Wetherspoons confirmed its Moon Under Water and Colombia Press venues in High Street will be open.

Wetherspoon spokesperson Eddie Gershon said: “Both The Moon Under Water and Colombia Press will serve alcohol from 10am instead of 9am on the day of the football match.

“This was requested by the police. Wetherspoon works closely with Watford police and licensing on an ongoing basis.

“Both pubs will be offering food, hot drinks and soft drinks from normal trading times on Sunday.”

Fans of both sides will be allowed into Moon Under Water but no Luton fans will be given entry to Colombia Press.

Meanwhile pub operator Mitchells & Butlers has confirmed its O’Neill’s branch next door to Watford Junction will be open but to away fans only.
