Forwards Vakoun Bayo and Samuel Kalu are the latest additions to Watford’s never-ending injury list ahead of tomorrow’s game at Cardiff.

Both players will travel to south Wales, but head coach Slaven Bilic said he’s not 100% confident about either of them at this stage.

Allied to that, he will definitely be without midfielder Hamza Choudhury, who is suspended after picking up his fifth booking of the season at Wigan on Saturday, while Keinan Davis and Craig Cathcart also remain sidelined.

“Again we have a couple of issues,” said Bilic.

Joao Pedro: king of the dribblers

“Kalu (ankle) and Bayo (ankle/dead leg) are both struggling. They are going to travel with us and we will see.

“We’ve trained today, but it’s the only full training session that we’ve had since the game at Wigan. Hopefully they will come through and will be ok.

“Cathcart and Davis are still out and they will not be in the squad for tomorrow. It is what it is.”

Bilic knew when he arrived that he had 11 games before the World Cup break, and with four of them to play he is definitely ticking off the days until there is a break

“We’ve said for a while now that what we want to do is cope with the injury situation until the World Cup break.

“We’ve four games to go until then, and of course we go into them in a positive frame of mind.

“First we were struggling for defenders, now they are slowly coming back and it’s started happening with strikers! It’s frustrating, but we’re in a positive moment right now and so I don’t want to sound negative. Of course it’s a blow, though, when you don’t have a lot of options.

“But still we don’t have to change shape. We’ve played before with two strikers, now we have to go with one striker but we still have enough players to keep our shape.

“Plus we have a lot of players who are very versatile, and they can play in a number of positions. That helps us in terms of those four positions across our attack.”

Having achieved back-to-back wins for the first time since April 21, Watford now have a chance to get a head of steam up even with their injury woes.

“Momentum is crucial,” said Bilic.

“If you look at all the big teams they talk about confidence and momentum, and the psychology of it all. It’s important.

“When you are winning games you feel less tired, you can’t wait for the next game to come.

“Back-to-back wins puts us on a good, positive wave and of course we’re going to do all we can to stay on that wave.”

The Watford head coach has watched tomorrow’s opponents and said a couple of red cards contributed to their recent run of three defeats, before they beat Rotherham at the weekend.

“I watched a couple of Cardiff games after our game against Wigan, and I like their team. They have energy and quality, and they play on the front foot.

“Okay they’ve lost a few games, but in a couple of them – against Swansea and QPR – they had a red card quite early in the game.

“Apart from that though they are good offensively, very solid defensively. A good team.”
