Oxhey Jets remembered one of their own by claiming a huge three points in their battle at the basement of the Combined Counties Premier Division North by beating relegation rivals Chalfont St Peter 3-2 last night.

Four years on from the death of Garry Beadle at the age of 36, Jets honoured the memory of their former player with a minute’s silence before kick-off as a G-shaped balloon was held by captain Tom Kennard.

The victory was only a third of the season in the league for the Boundary Stadium club and moves them five points behind last night’s opponents. With two sides to be relegated at the end of the season, the win crucially leaves Jets six points behind third-from-bottom Wokingham & Emmbrook – and with four games in hand.

Following Saturday’s 6-0 defeat at leaders Ascot United, David Barnes’ side crucially got their noses in front in spectacular fashion when Spencer Bellotti scored with a 40-yard daisy-cutter.

Chalfont equalised from a corner, but the youthful Oxhey side went back in front when Sam Woods netted a well-taken individual goal against his former club.

The game was a desperate battle for both teams but when Bellotti was wrestled to the ground, Deago Dunbar-Bonnie smashed home the penalty to make it 3-1.

Jets thought they had tied up the points with a powerful header but it was ruled out for another player in an offside position, then with four minutes to play Chalfont scored to set up a nervous finale.

The hosts held on for a vital three points in their battle to beat the drop though, ahead of another home game on Saturday against fourth-placed Flackwell Heath.
