Players such as John Barnes and Nigel Callaghan may have made more flair but arguably nobody epitomised the work ethic of Graham Taylor’s Watford team of the 1980s better than Les Taylor.

Signed from Oxford United in 1980, this tenacious hard worker was an integral cog in the midfield engine room as the Hornets completed their meteoric rise to the top tier of the English game and continued their adventure into Europe.

The midfielder made a total of 211 league and cup appearances during almost six years at Vicarage Road, the most prestigious of which was when he became the first player to captain Watford in an FA Cup Final in 1984.
