A special commemorative fixture to celebrate the centenary of Watford’s move from Cassio Road to Vicarage Road has raised more than £3,500 for two good causes.

Hornets favourite Tommy Mooney took charge of Watford Centurions, a team of supporters representing Watford FC, for the ‘Match of the Century’ against West Herts FC at the Park Avenue sports club on Saturday morning.

However, the Watford Sunday League side proved too strong and ran out 3-0 winners.

The Centurions squad consisted of players who had donated a minimum of £100 to play for at least an hour, with the donations split between Peace Hospice Care and the Hornets’ Community Sports & Education Trust. Further fundraising at the event was in aid of the Peace Hospice.

The Hornets’ representative side took to the field in the club’s commemorative black and white striped VR100 kit while their opponents wore a replica of the yellow, red and green hoops Watford played in during its time at the West Herts club.

The commemorative fixture had originally been due to be played in September but was postponed following the death of the Queen.

Formerly part of the estate of the Earls of Essex, the Park Avenue location was transformed into a sports ground in 1890, becoming West Herts Sports Club on August 28, 1922 under a deed of trust.
