A gifted martial arts fighter from Watford has taken her number of world title successes into double figures at the age of just 17 after two triumphs within the space of a month.

Ellie Harber punched, kicked and elbowed her way to her tenth global title in Bangkok, Thailand, at the 18th World Muay Thai Federation Championship last week.

That victory came after the teenager, who fights out of Knowsley Academy in Edgware, won the Amateur Muay Thai World Open Championships in Great Yarmouth at the end of February.

For her win in Bangkok on March 14, Harber competed for Team England against Thayna Cunha from Brazil in the Under 18 years under 60kg weight class.

The fight was over three rounds, with both competitiors showing why they are the best at their weight class in their countries.

The West Herts College student was the more dominant fighter, demonstrating hard kicks, “flying” elbows and good punches. She won all three rounds and took the title.

Team England, which Harber was proud to be part of, had an outstanding tournament, as they bought home 11 gold medals, one silver and one bronze beating a wide range of opponents from across the world.

Her ninth world title had been achieved against Meg Harrison of Kamma Gym, Scotland in the under 18 years, 58 to 61kg category.

The 17-year-old produced a good display of kicks, knees, punches, and elbows throughout the fight, leading her to win all three rounds cleanly.

Lyndon Knowles, Ellie’s Muay Thai coach, WBC and Roar Heavyweight Muay Thai World Champion, who was training for his successful world title defence said: “I was not able to travel with Ellie because of my own fight camp but I knew we had prepared well, and she was ready to win her next title. Ellie knew what she had to do and under the coaches of Team England I knew she would deliver. And she did!

“I am proud and look forward to her taking her next steps. We are looking forward to June when she will be aiming to go again for another title.”

Harber said: “I am extremely lucky to do what I love. My latest trip to Thailand consisted of training in some great places and culminated with a great win. It is important that I keep training hard and with the best, as I want to get to the top and that takes work, and a great support infrastructure.

“I am thankful to my family, coaches at Knowsley, especially Lyndon, Team England coaches (Richard and Lisa Smith) who supported me and West Herts College who allowed me the time off to compete. I am looking forward to getting back into the gym and getting ready for my next challenge.”

Sponsorship is critical to supporting Harber’s ambition of continuing her fight journey.
