There were not many redeeming features about Dave Bassett’s short and unsuccessful spell as Watford manager but it did mean fans had the opportunity to watch a very gifted left boot in action in a yellow shirt.
Glyn Hodges may not have captured the imagination in quite the same way as his predecessor on that flank, John Barnes, but he was superb striker of a ball with his left foot and brought plenty of skill and vision to the Hornets’ forward play, although it wasn't always consistently applied.
Having been part of the Wimbledon side that went from the Fourth to the First Division under Bassett, Hodges followed the manager to Vicarage Road and outlasted him by two full seasons, scoring 19 goals in a total of 102 league and cup appearances from October 1987 to May 1990.
