One of perhaps the most embarrassing cases of mistaken identity from a national newspaper yesterday saw Watford’s Yaser Asprilla described as the “son of a sex-obsessed ex-Prem star who now sells condoms” for nearly three hours online.

The Daily Star published a story on their website at 2.51pm on Monday, in which they suggested the Hornets’ young Colombian midfielder was the son of former Newcastle striker Faustino Asprilla.

It was taken down a little less than three hours later – the Watford Observer understands the club contacted The Daily Star directly to request the article be summarily removed as soon as they saw it.

While Yaser and Faustino share the same surname, are both Colombian and play football, that is where the similarities stop.

Faustino is not Yaser’s Dad, nor are the two related in any way.

The story reported that Yaser has been attracting the attention of the likes of Brighton as well as Newcastle, the club Faustino (not his Dad) once played for.

However, the Daily Star also correctly pointed out that at the recent fan forum club chairman Scott Duxbury said Asprilla in “not leaving”.

But then the article went on to tell the tale of 52-year-old Faustino, who retired in 2004, moving into the condom business in 2016.

The story quoted Faustino from an interview he gave to La Gazzetta dello Sport, in which he said: "I have a farm, I sell sugar cane to the Colombian government and through an advertising campaign I sell condoms."

The story continued that the condoms are flavoured and Faustino recommended the guava flavour because “when I was growing up, we had a guava tree in our garden and that's a flavour and aroma that’s very good for romancing”.

Apparently, according to the Star story, Faustino has also posed for naked pictures and been invited to appear in porn films.

However, the Watford Observer are happy to confirm that Yaser Asprilla is not his son or related to him at all.

The Daily Star have been contacted for comment.
