The first Watford player to be sold for £1m, and all-round club legend, Luther Blissett joined us on the phone for a quick Q&A session during our live transfer deadline day blog.

Here’s what the club’s record goalscorer said:

If you were Ben or Scott with your shopping list today is there any position you may be hoping to fill on it above all else.

“The holding defensive midfielder. I see this as a crucial area looking at the pattern of play we are going for.”

How difficult is it to manage a transfer - do you leave loads of irons in fire or cherry pick?

“You have your hit list and back-ups. Scouts will have been out there helping compile a list of potentials. You make your approach to the CLUB as early as possible. Scouts will often be a source of information about movement with a player and you want to register interest early (and quietly) on a good prospect.”

Have you ever discussed Harry Redknapp’s deadline day car window interviews with him?!

“Isn’t that just part of the reality TV aspect that gets viewers talking?!”

Ian Bolton was regarded as a great buy. What is a ‘buy’ today and is everything over complicated?

“A great buy is a player that comes in and from the first game looks as though he (or she) has been there from day one – that is a great buy. You only should be considering players who want to be part of what you are creating. And they must be at home with that.”

Is it buy to sell or buy to build these days – and not just at Watford?

“In our position (anyone not in the top eight of the EPL) you buy players to make your team stronger and better, but you also understand that if the player turns out to be performing exceptionally the bigger clubs will come looking. You can have purely investment players, although I personally don’t agree with that approach. My feeling is that if you are spending money you want them to be playing for you. If they are sold later on, then your training and performance has worked and it’s ‘a good job done’.

Do you sit and watch deadline day unfold on Sky?

“Doesn’t everybody?! It has become almost like a reality show now, Eurovision for football. But to be fair, in the USA the draft event for team sports is a huge spectacle. Perhaps we will see it all playing out for the EPL at the O2 with a live concert one day… For now, the pizza is ordered and tv will be on.”

How hard is it to hit the ground running when you sign for a new team?

“I am often asked this - is it like first day at school. No matter how good you are if the team are under performing that is an added pressure when you debut. You arrive at training and hopefully that lifts everyone before your first game.”

What were your first impressions of Mileta Rajovic?

“First centre forward I have seen at Watford for the last 10 years that the first movement he did was to affect their defender. Tom Walley would have loved that, as would Graham.”

If you were playing, in your prime, as the No.9 in this Valerien Ismael team, how many goals do you think you’d score?

“I think you mean No.8 Andrew!! I think we all know the answer. In fact I have 186 answers for you!!
