The scale of the overhaul of Watford’s squad since the end of last season is again illustrated after the club’s EFL squad list was revealed.
The EFL has published the squad lists for all clubs in the Championship, League One and League Two on its website and it shows the Hornets squad list has 22 players aged 21 – three less than the permitted 25.
That means there is scope for Valerien Ismael to add a free agent to the squad if he feels the need to, or the Hornets could bring in up to three new players in the January transfer window without having to leave anyone out of the current squad.
Players aged under 21 - except those on loan - do not count towards the 25-man squads which means Ryan Andrews and Ismael Kone are not listed, along with other young professionals including Tobi Adeyemo, Michael Adu-Poku and Jack Grieves.
EFL rules also state a minimum of eight players in the 25-man squad must be 'homegrown' (HG) – the EFL defines this as players who have, irrespective of nationality or age, been registered with any club in England or Wales for 36 months, continuous or not, before their 21st birthday.
Eleven of the 22-man Watford squad fulfil the 'homegrown' rule of which three are goalkeepers Daniel Bachmann, Ben Hamer and Myles Roberts.
EFL rules state a 'club-developed player' must also be included in the squad list. This is a player who has been on their books for a minimum of 12 months before the end of their under-19 season. Watford have nominated Yaser Asprilla for this purpose.
Watford’s EFL squad list is as follows:
Yaser Asprilla
Daniel Bachmann (HG)
Vakoun Bayo
Giorgi Chakvetadze
Tom Dele-Bashiru (HG)
Rhys Healey (HG)
