Ryan Porteous scored his first goal for Scotland in a 3-0 Euro 2024 qualifier win against Cyprus last night to help put his country on the brink of reaching the finals.

The victory leaves Scotland nine points clear of Spain at the top of Group A, and they need just two points from their final three games to be certain of their place in Germany next summer.

However, should Norway and Georgia draw when they meet on Tuesday, Porteous and Scotland will qualify immediately.

The Watford defender netted Scotland’s second goal in Larnaca after 16 minutes, hammering the ball home after Jack Hendry had knocked down Andy Robertson’s free kick.

It was the sixth cap of Porteous’ career and Scotland have not lost any of the games he has played, and have conceded only goal in that half dozen matches.

Porteous and Scotland are next in action on Tuesday when they host England in a friendly at Hampden Park.

In the same group as Scotland, Watford’s on-loan winger Giorgi Chakvetadze was also on the scoresheet for Georgia, but their game had a far less happy ending.

Playing at home to Spain, Georgia were 4-0 down at half-time and went on to suffer a 7-1 defeat.

However, Chakvetadze scored four minute after coming on at half-time, though his 12-yard shot somehow went through the hands and under the body of Spanish keeper Unai Simon.

Chakvetadze now has 17 full caps for Georgia, and last night’s goal was his eighth.

It was a very mixed night for Hornets captain Daniel Bachmann.

The keeper played his first game for Austria since March 2022, a friendly against Moldova in Linz.

However he conceded a goal after only three minutes when his attempt to control defender Kevin Danso’s back pass with his head eight yards outside the penalty area went wrong and Moldova’s Vitalie Damascan stole the ball before planting it into the empty net.

Austria ended up drawing the game 1-1, and their next game is on Tuesday when they face Sweden in a Euro 2024 qualifier.

That game could see Bachmann facing Watford teammate Ken Sema, who is in the Swedish squad to face Estonia in a Group F qualifying game in Tallinn tonight (5pm UK time).

At the same time this evening, Edo Kayembe is part of the DR Congo squad that will take on Sudan in Group I of qualification for the African Cup of Nations.

On Tuesday, Kayembe and the DR Congo squad will face South Africa in a friendly.
