Watford Women’s general manager Helen Ward was last night inducted into the Welsh Sports Hall of Fame.

The former Hornets captain stepped down from international sport earlier this year, ending an illustrious career with 105 Welsh caps and 44 goals - a national record that surpasses the 41 scored by Gareth Bale for the men's side.

Ward won the FA Cup once with Arsenal, played in two more finals and enjoyed a career at both amateur and professional levels with the Gunners, Chelsea, Watford and Reading that saw her win other titles and promotions.

She took time off to have two children during her career, but came back to score more goals for club and country before retiring in May 2023 - after helping Watford gain promotion back to the Championship.

Since then she has taken up the general manager position, and remains a key part of the club set-up.

• Goalkeeper Rebekah Dowsett and midfielder Laila Harbert have both been selected for the England Under-17 squad for their upcoming double header against Germany during a week-long training camp.

Dowsett has been on the bench for Watford this season due to fellow keeper Jacqui Goldsmid’s finger injury.

Arsenal’s Herbert is with Watford on a dual registration and made her full debut in the win at Charlton on Sunday.

Natalie Henderson’s side will meet up on Monday before facing Germany at St. George’s Park at 6pm on Friday and then take on the same opposition at 12pm on Monday September 25.

This camp will help preparations ahead of round one of qualifying for the 2023-24 UEFA European Women's Under-17 Championship in November.

• Katie Reid, who is at Watford this season on a dual registration from Arsenal, has been named by head coach Amy Merricks in the England Under-19 squad that will play Denmark (Wednesday September 20) and Germany (Tuesday September 26) during the international break.
