If there is one thing that would have earned Watford more points in their first five games, it would be cutting out avoidable errors.

The defeat at home to Blackburn was ultimately very much their own undoing and with the amount of possession and chances Plymouth should have been put to the sword at Vicarage Road.

Worst of the lot so far, though, was at the CBS Arena where but for their own shortcomings the Hornets would have won the game at Coventry and come home with two extra points.

The defence had looked pretty solid up until the final game before the international break, but that 90 minutes was littered with mistakes at the back.

“It’s a feeling about the situation, to recognise the situation,” said Watford head coach Valerien Ismael, himself a former defender.

“If it is a high press from the opponent then it’s not only the player with the ball it’s the movement from the other players around him.

“Of all the things we work on, for sure reducing the mistakes we’ve made is up there.

“But as I have said, it is a process. You have to go through this, and accept some mistakes because you have changed the mindset and the way to play.

“Until it becomes a habit and the players become used to that then we have to reinforce the messages all the time.

“I would say that in the first block of games we wanted to see the identity on the pitch, and to see what we had tried to work on with the players.

“I think that feeling is there, and now for this next block of games it’s all about getting the points and the rewards.

“We want to have more points on the table than we did in the first block of games.

“We want to confirm our performances but at the same time to keep moving forward more quickly than in the first block of games.

“There is always pressure on everyone. I want to win, we all want to win, and when you don’t win games you are not satisfied.

“We have a home game with our fans and we know the potential we have. We know we can play well enough to win games, but now we need to show that on the pitch.”
