The most senior referee of British South Asian heritage in the country is set to officiate in his first game in the Championship when Watford look to extend their unbeaten run to five games on Saturday.

Sunny Singh Gill has been appointed as the man in the middle for the Hornets’ trip to Huddersfield Town.

When the official took charge of the League Two match between Northampton Town and Hartlepool United in August 2022, he became the first British South Asian to referee an EFL fixture since his dad, Jarnail Singh, more than a decade ago.

Singh Gill has been one of the busier referees this season, taking charge of a total of 14 league and cup matches so far in which he has shown a total of 64 yellow cards and two reds.

However, Saturday’s match at the John Smith’s Stadium will be the first time he has taken charge of a match in the second tier of the English game.

Paul Hodskinson and Alex James are due to be the fourth officials for the 3pm kick-off, with David Webb the fourth official.
