A referee is due to take charge of a match involving Watford for the first time this season when the Hornets return to league action at Vicarage Road for the first time this year tomorrow.

The EFL website has announced that James Linington has been appointed to officiate the Championship encounter against Cardiff City.

The experienced official, who became and EFL referee in 2008, has been in the middle for 17 league and cup games this season, issuing a total of 72 yellow cards and one red.

Linington’s last Hornets match was the 1-0 defeat at QPR in March 2023, but prior to that he took charge of the 1-0 victory at Norwich City at the start of last year and the 2-0 home win against Reading in November 2022.

Andrew Fox and Andrew Dallison are due to be the assistant referees for the 3pm kick off at Vicarage Road, with Paul Howard on fourth official duties.
