The referee who will be forever remembered by Watford fans for awarding the ‘ghost goal’ at Vicarage Road in 2008 is due to be in charge when the Hornets aim to get back to winning ways at Norwich City tomorrow night.

The EFL website has announced that Stuart Atwell has been appointed to take charge of the Championship fixture at Carrow Road.

The 41-year-old Premier League referee hit the headlines after mistakenly awarding a Reading goal instead of a corner during a 2-2 draw on September 20, 2008.

Attwell has taken charge of total of 16 matches this season, including international and European fixtures, and has shown a total of 65 yellow cards and three reds.

The last time Attwell refereed a Hornets fixture was the 2-0 Premier League defeat at Liverpool in April 2022.

Neil Davies and Matthew Wilks are due to be the assistant referees for the 7.45pm kick-off, with Darren Drysdale the fourth official.
