Watford’s Under-17s make the long journey north to Fleetwood Town tonight (Tuesday) with the chance to win some silverware and showcase the talent bubbling under in the Academy.

They face The Fishermen in the final of the Premier Development League Under-17 Cup.

The game kicks off at 7pm and there will be a full and free live blog on the Watford Observer website so Hornets fans can follow the game.

The team reached the final under the leadership of Tom Cleverley, but with him now in interim charge of the first team, the Under-17 squad will be led by Adam Beletta and Ryan Jackett, son of former Hornets midfielder, manager and coach Kenny.

The competition started way back in September when the 16 teams were split into four groups of four and played each other team in their group once.

Watford actually lost their opening game at home to Crewe 3-2, but an away win over Sheffield Wednesday (2-0) and a home success against Sheffield United (2-1) was enough to earn them second place in their group and a place in the quarter-finals.

At the end of January they beat Millwall 3-0 at home in the last eight to earn a semi-final against Burnley.

That was played at the London Colney training ground, where goals from goals from Kristian Shevchenko and Max Smith secured a 2-0 win.

You can read the report of that semi-final victory by clicking here.

Both the goalscorers have famous fathers – the surname gives away the fact that Andrij is the Dad of Kristian while Max is the son of former Hornet Tommy Smith.

Fleetwood were runners-up in Burnley’s group, and reached the final by beating Colchester 2-1 in the quarter-final, and then winning 2-0 at Crewe in the semi-final.

The venue of the final was drawn out of the hat, which is why Watford face the 500-mile round-trip tomorrow.

Should any Watford fans fancy joining them, then tickets are £5 for adults and £3 for seniors and Under-18s.

Although some of the players will still be 16 or younger, there are one or two names that may be familiar among the squad, especially to those who have been to watch recent Under-21 games at Vicarage Road.

Wingers Zavier Massiah-Edwards and Amin Nabizada have both been on the bench for a first-team game this season, and the pair were very impressive for the Under-21s in last week’s 1-0 home defeat to Hull.

Raul Vancea is only 15, but he has recently represented England Under-16s and came on as sub for the Under-21s against Hull.
