Memories of day Elton John became Watford FC vice-president

These pictures from the Watford Observer archive were taken on that day when Elton John and his then manager Vic Lewis visited Vicarage Road for a meeting with chairman Jim Bonser, as well as spending some time behind the scenes with Mike Keen and his players as they prepared for the forthcoming Division Three campaign.

(Image: Watford Observer) “Such was the chairman’s suspicion of anyone coming bearing gifts, that the pop star’s interest in becoming a director was deliberately played down when I arranged a meeting for them with the chairman.”

A look behind the scenes in the physio's room. (Image: Watford Observer) That meeting “passed off amicably” with Elton and Vic Lewis being made vice-presidents and arrangements were made for an end-of-season concert to be staged at the ground.
