Watford Under-21s are waiting on the result between Leyton Orient and Coventry City on Thursday night to discover whether they have qualified for the last 16 of the Premier League Cup after losing 4-2 at Blackburn.
Anything less than a three-goal win for Orient will see Charlie Daniels' side through, but they missed the opportunity to do it on their own terms on Tuesday night.
Valentin Joseph gave the hosts the lead after 18 minutes, before a Kristian Shevchenko brace had the Hornets in front before the half hour mark, the second a header.
Rovers were level again before half-time when Aodhan Doherty netted, and Joseph completed his brace to make it 3-2 five minutes after the break.
And in second-half stoppage time, Patrik Farkas sealed the win after Josh Keyes had gone close to equalising.
It leaves Watford with a wait to discover their fate.
