Watford Under-21s were knocked out of the Premier League Cup by Sunderland on Friday night, despite a spirited performance against PL2 opposition.

Captain Josh Mullins went close with a first-half header that hit the post, with Max Smith and Bently Assiedou also threatening at the Eppleton Colliery Welfare Ground.

The Mackems took control after the break, though, Finn Geragusian nodding in past Gabriel Ortelli to give the hosts the lead.

Lewis Campbell made it two with 15 minutes to play, before completing a brace seven minutes later as he slotted in.

Max Smith pulled one back for Watford late on but it was not enough to stir a comeback, Aidy Mariappa's side knocked out in the last eight.

Watford: Ortelli (GK), Hunt (Tomiwa Akinyimika 80), Eames, Mullins (C), Kamga, Georgiou, Smith, Tobi Akinyimika (Gorman 87), Lawson (Lamothe 80), Nabizada, Assiedou (Chikovani 60)

Unused subs: Browne (GK)
