Watford Under-21s raced into a 4-0 lead before half-time, eventually beating Wigan 4-2 at London Colney on Friday afternoon.
Amin Nabizada - among the scorers - and Jonathan Lawson were both withdrawn at the break ahead of travelling up to Stoke City with the first team, but the damage was well and truly done.
Nabizada made it 1-0 after six minutes when he drove in from the edge of the box before Max Smith smashed in a second.
Lawson teed up summer signing Nikoloz Chikovani to make it three just after the half-hour mark and Hayden Barrett hooked in for four.
A number of other chances went begging either side of the break, before Elijah Igiehon pulled one back for the visitors.
Igiehon slid a second past Gabriel Ortelli but it didn't threaten a dominant home win.
