Alessio Dionisi felt Watford deserved a draw from their 1-0 defeat at West Brom on Saturday, having watched his side spurn several presentable chances.
Othmane Maamma had the best of them inside three minutes, shooting straight at the keeper, before Martin Payero and Stephy Mavididi missed the target in the second half.
And despite juggling his players to the extent that Albert Eames, Kevin Keben and Edo Kayembe shared full-back duties during the second half, Dionisi extracted a good performance level out of his side.
He said: "I agree with you, but in this moment it's difficult for us to find goals.
"If you don't score, it's impossible to win. I can speak for the mentality on the pitch but the result is negative.
"I thought in our last match we had a lot of chances but no goals and today we stayed well for 90 minutes again.
"For the chances, in the first matches it was not easy for us to arrive in the box, but today we did. I'm sorry because scoring once would have been right."
It was put to Dionisi how frustrating it must be that Watford look close to being a very good side but can't quite put it together, for several reasons.
Now his task is to ensure the positive feeling that has defined pre-season and the very start of the campaign does not evaporate after two defeats on the road.
He said: "Yes, I agree. Today I'm not happy for the result, but my team played well. Now the team will improve every day.
"This is our job [mentality] because at half-time I spoke with my team, because the team grows better if they keep going in every situation.
"After the first half my team lost, and in the second half I saw a good team, a good unit.
"My team played well, which for me is important. It's good to think positive and now it's important to recover and to arrive to a positive result.
"We have to improve to build the mentality."
