Watford FC Women are adjusting to life in the WSL2 and climbed out of the relegation zone in their final game before the international break.
It is Watford’s first season in the second tier, following promotion last season, after they beat Plymouth Argyle to the FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division title by a single point.
The WSL2 has not been easy for Watford, however, with the Women’s side winless in all six games before the international break, including an opening Subway Players Cup defeat at Crystal Palace.
Despite the difficult start, Burnley’s defeat away to Nottingham Forest meant that a point on the road at Wolves was enough for Watford to climb out of the relegation zone by a point.
Although the start to the season has been difficult, Watford have only lost one game by more than a single goal, which happened in a game where Watford were reduced to nine players due to receiving two red cards.
Phoebie Poole made her first WSL2 start for the club in last Sunday’s draw at Wolves, and scored the Hornets’ second of the game, which, at the time, put them 2-1 up.
Poole reflected on her first Watford goal, after joining from Plymouth this summer, and offered her thoughts on the game in an interview with club media post-match.
“I’m absolutely buzzing,” the 22-year-old Welsh international said. “It’s my first league start and first goal. Hopefully, I can go on a run.
“We created a lot of chances and were unlucky not to get on the end of some of them. In moments we really controlled the game. It’s a shame we only got a point, but it’s a point from an away game, so we can be happy.”
Continuing to speak about how Watford can move forward and get positive results on the board, Poole insisted that the Golden Girls need to do better with the chances they create.
“We just need to find that second gear again in the final third,” she admitted. "We’re creating loads, we’re getting across the box.
“It’s someone just having the bravery to put their foot through it and put it in the back of the net. Hopefully, I can do that in the next couple of weeks.”
After the international break, Watford Women return with a test against Leicester City in the Subway Players Cup, on October 17.
